Not a no-no

June 29, 2008

Jeff Weaver pitched a hitless 6 for the Angels last night, and his bullpen achieved the same feat. Yet, he lost, and the team was not awarded a no-hitter. Why? After giving up a run on two errors and two stolen bases in the fifth, the Dodgers did not bat in the bottom of the ninth. And by major league rules, if 9 complete innings aren’t pitched, it’s not a no hitter. Can you think of an odder rule? Why should you have to play nine for you to be awarded a no-no? In an entire game, the Angels did not give up a hit, so why shouldn’t they be awarded a no-hitter. People have thrown no-hitters and lost in the past, just they pitched nine innings. It’s ridiculous. I know, when it comes down to it, all that matters is the W, but it’s still very odd.

Wall-e

June 27, 2008

TTATOG and I saw Disney Pixar’s Wall-E today. For all of its flaws, it wasn’t that bad. By no means was it Finding Nemo or The Incredibles, but it’s still worth your time. Stay tuned for our video review.

A Wie Bit Short

June 26, 2008

Michelle Wie quadruple-bogeyed the ninth at the Woman’s Open today, putting her at a 42 for the turn, and she currently sits 9 behind the early leaders, putting her basically out of contention. A young superstar who at one point showed much promise now sits out of the running after a bad injury. The 18 year-old Hawaiian was in a self-absorbed state of shock after her ball finally entered the hole at the ninth. It seems one can never experience too many ups and downs.

George Carlin

June 23, 2008

George Carlin died yesterday at the age of 71. He was a great comedian whose acts touched many. What I believe is so amazing about his comedy, is the way that it’s lasted through many years. With the general taste in comedy ever-changing, the fact that he appeals to so many, of nearly four generations, really speaks for himself. My favorite of his acts, his baseball vs. football rant.

News-eum

June 16, 2008

I just returned home from a wonderful trip to the Newseum in D.C. I got one thing to say: LOVED IT!

First of all, before even getting to the actual content, the building is be-you-tee-full, the technology is state of the art, and the layout is fantastic (unless you’re very, very afraid of heights, then be sure to avoid the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory-esqe elevators).

Now for the content. It was stunning. There was an exhibit all about the first amendment and the five rights (can you name them? double the percentage of people can name the Simpsons than the five rights of the first amendment.) Another dealt with the pres’s reactions to 9/11, a third showcased over 100 front pages from this morning (yes, they change them daily.)

The newseum (never gets old) also focuses many different theaters, all free. One shows clips from news reports spanning the 20th and 21st centuries, while my favorite, the sports theater, played a very interesting short film on the progression of sports reporting since its origins.

Anyway, if you’re ever in DC, this is a 100% can’t miss opportunity.

GYA

quick correction the newseum is not free, but still very worth the 8 or 10 dollars plus if you pay extra you can enter a studio where you can make your own mini newscast

wajigmas belated review of indiana jones 4 kingdom of the crystal skull

June 16, 2008

ttatog here after seeing the fourth installment in the indiana jones series. ive decided to start ranking videos 3 ways: see in theaters, see on videos and avoid at all costs. im giving indiana jones 4 a see on video.

now the movie itself was ok, shia labuff was pretty cool, despite being as shia said at one point “like 80″ harrison ford was able to bring back the indiana jones we all know and love, but other than that the acting was mediocre at best.

the plot was laaaaaaaaaaaaaaaame. director george lucas has made this movie much more fantastical then they have ever been before by including interdimensional species. now thats all i want to give away but i gotta say they rly were not that great. other than that it followed the same plot line the rest did. indiana looses an artifact in an epic battle to open up the movie, he finds one of his friends is missing, then they have some cryptic clue that indiana solves and they fly off you know the drill.

oh right one more spoiler the nazis have been replaced with the KGB and yes you guessed it the red scare plays a huge part of the movie.

the special effects were bad, they seemed to cartoony at the end. although you could tell that lucas tried to tribute the other movies in small ways such as the fight coreography having the same corny sound effects, and other things that im not going to give away.

is indi back? i hope not, im begining to sense that george lucas has passed his prime. his movies over the last few years have been hollow and as i was walking out i saw a cinematic poster for… starwars: the clones wars the animated version. WHY?! GOD WHY?! so mabye there will be a fifth but who knows mabye old harrison ford will get a hernia while jumping or something. or mabye it will be called “indiana jones 5 journey for the lost nursing home” but i think that they should have been left at 3 movies and i hope that the damage stops here.

again see this movie wen it comes out on dvd or if u have 10 bucks lying around

the tale of two legends

June 12, 2008

ttatog back again with another media related discussion.

november 21 2008 harry potter and the half blood prince hits theaters after number 5 last summer truly rocked the box office.

december 12 2008 twilight, a movie based off of the new hit book series hits theaters targeting roughly the same audience as harry potter.

the question is: who will win? will daniel radcliff lead the largest movie franchise in history to another successful flick? or will the new series twilight truly be the next harry potter?

fans of both series have been eagerly battling each other arguing back and forth with thousands of video blogs and skits. now its time for wajigma perspective.

if you recall in 2005 the book series eragon made a movie. at the time the same rumors were floating around. Eragon the book was an enormous hit and people began to question harry potters monopoly over the young adults book market. but unfortunately it was never meant to be, the movie crashed and was followed by a good but not ground breaking sequel “eldest”.

so im predicting that twilight will experience the same failure. the series has only been out for 2 years and i feel like they are jumping the gun a little bit. there are no truly spectacular actors in this film, robert pattison playing the main character edward cullen. now if you recall this isnt the first time this actor has gone head to head against daniel radcliff, he also played cedric digory in harry potter and the goblet of fire.

i must say that the odds do not look good for twilight but, please prove me wrong keep the discussion going.

ttatog out

GYA here, I agree that they may have jumped the gun, but I feel that the reason Eragon failed as a film was because the book had no original ideas in it, and therefore when it was made a movie, people complained that they were seeing a Star Wars, The Lord of the Rings, and Earthsea takeoff. The movie didn’t follow the book enough, and it kept everything that was copied from other books (not hard). However, Twilight is an original story, and the question will be will it feel like an original movie. It has potential, but rushed potential.

NBA Officiating (If your even willing to call it that)

June 11, 2008

Those of you who have been with us for a while know that I have many a times bashed the NBA officiating. However, last night’s performance was nothing short of embarrassing. I now realize there is a reason that the Lakers have not lost at home this postseason, and that is the fact that the officiating is so favored toward them its preposterous. Ever time Kobe stepped inside the key he was fouled, even twice I counted when he was literally not touched. Heck, he shot twenty odd free-throws in the first half! That’s utterly ridiculous. I know the NBA wants this series to go more than five, but do they have to make it as obvious as how much they wanted this series to begin with? All I have to say is that the Celtics got robbed last night. I know, Doc Rivers is doing almost as bad a job as the refs (1: Why on earth is Sam Cassel seeing the light of day, he’s awful? And why isn’t Rondo running the O for at least 40 minutes? 2: Putting Ray Allen on Kobe 1 on 1 in the closing minutes. Ray might be a great defender, but even I’m not stupid enough to realize that you got to double and make someone else beat you.), but considering Pierce and Garnet had an off night, they were in it until the very end, and the Celtics played against the Lakers and the Refs, I think we all realize how much of a mismatch this really is.

Pendragon-Looking Ahead Follow-Up

June 5, 2008

As you may have read TTATOG and I (GYA) had the opportunity to hear DJ MacHale, author of Pendragon speak a week ago about is newest book, Raven Rise. During this speech he said something very interesting, and that is that in the final book, the goal will not be to find out the answer to the “secrets” (for those of you who have read the book, just think of any question Bobby has asks enough times to make you roll you eyes when you hear it again), rather you will find out the answer to all of them in the first 100 pages, and then read the finale of the saga knowing them all.

-GYA

that being said im sure that bobby will have some sort of adventure as he finds these answers, all and all i think this upcoming book is going to a very entertaining (but monotonously long) conclusion to a very good saga.
